25 Common Blogging Mistakes for Beginners (And How to Fix Them Fast)

Blogging Mistakes in Nigeria

When I started my blog Incomeaffairs in February this year, I spent several hours and in many occasions sleepless nights writing high quality articles. I handled the on-page SEO and other technical SEO in the most ethical ways. And the result? Most of my posts were ranking on the first page of Google on their respective keywords.

But along the line, I started getting redirect errors in my Google search console (GSC). I suspected the cause of the redirect error to be partly as a result of the theme I was using. In a bit to fix those redirect errors I started troubleshooting and changing from one theme to another. That single mistake of making several major site changes in a short period caused me a bigger technical SEO problem. Even after the redirect errors were gone, I discovered that some of my pillar posts were all indexed but they became invisible in the SERP.  I literally lost ranking as Google became confused about my pages and it took them several days or weeks to recrawl and restore my rankings.

One mistake can crash someone's many days, weeks or months of blogging efforts. I know how painful a blogging mistake can be. I once deleted my blog which was already monetized with AdSense mistakenly. I lost everything and when I didn't see my backup files from my devices, I had to start again from the scratch.

If you have ever made any mistake in your blog, I want you to know that you are not alone, Take a cup of coffee and come along with me because in this post I will unveil to you common blogging mistakes beginners make that are killing their blog growth, traffic and monetization opportunities. I will also show you practical measures you can take to fix them.

The truth is, the most challenging problem limiting your blog from growing and attracting massive traffic is not always lack of effort or content. In many cases, it comes down to many blogging mistakes that quietly undermine your efforts and make it difficult for your blog to attend any significant growth or success.

Many new bloggers focus on publishing more articles daily or weekly but ignore critical issues that affect search rankings, user experience, content quality, and monetization. As a result, their blogs remain invisible to the people they are trying to reach.
The good news is that most of these mistakes are completely avoidable once you know what to do and what not to do to your blog.

In this guide, you'll discover 25 common blogging mistakes in Nigeria, why they hurt your blog, and the practical steps you can take to fix them right now. Whether your goal is to get more traffic, qualify for AdSense, rank higher on Google, or build a sustainable online business, these insights can help you avoid costly setbacks and grow your blog faster than you expected.

I can tell you for free, some of the mistakes on this list may already be affecting your blog without you knowing it. Let's start with the first one.

Choosing a Niche Without Market Demand

While I was researching and writing this post, one question that came to my mind was, " are there really blogging niches without market demand?".  The answer is YES.

One of the common mistakes new bloggers make is choosing a niche without market demand.

Make no mistakes, there are niches that have very little commercial demand, weak audience demand, or poor monetization potential. That doesn't mean nobody reads them. It means there are not enough people searching for them, spending money on them, or advertisers targeting them.

Let's take for example a niche in the Personal Daily Diary Blog,

If your blog post says "What I Ate Today" or "My Daily Activities".

You are already dealing with a niche with little or no market demand.

Some of the reasons why the Market demand is low are:

  • Strangers generally don't care about the daily life of someone they don't know.
  • Search volume is almost nonexistent.
  • Few advertisers target this audience.
  • This niche is very difficult to generate repeat visitors.

I know you would ask me Damian what If the blogger is already famous or has a strong personal brand? That is his advantage. Yes he can leverage on his celebrity status and large community to drive significant traffic and revenue to his blog but when his popularity fades and community diminishes, he will struggle to grow in this niche, let alone making sustainable income from it.

There are several other niches with low market demand such as extremely narrow local gossip niches.  A good example is " rumors in one small community or village".

How many people are interested to read about rumors in one community? This niche doesn't have any substantial market demand. You need to be very careful when choosing a blog niche you can monetize to make money online.

Another example is obsolete technology niches ( Choosing a blog niche in an outdated or obsolete technology niche is a big mistake that can cost you a fortune in the long term.

Take for example if you create a niche blog that writes and publishes tutorials exclusively about floppy disks, Windows 98 troubleshooting, or outdated mobile phones etc, how many people would want to read such articles? You can't make any money from it because the niche is already outdated. You will struggle to grow or scale traffic beyond your local audience in this kind of niche.

Another niche that has little or no market demand is random quote collection blogs.

A good example is a website containing only motivational quotes copied from other sources.

This blog niche will always have a low market demand because it is highly saturated, has little original value, it's easy for users to find elsewhere and it has Poor AdSense approval prospects because content often lacks uniqueness.

Don't get it contorted. Many bloggers think a niche has no demand when the real problem is that they chose a niche with no clear problem to solve.

How to Find a High Market Demand Niche

To find if a blog niche has a high market demand, check if people are :

  • Searching for answers.
  • Trying to make money.
  • Trying to save money.
  • Trying to improve health.
  • Trying to learn a skill.
  • Trying to solve a painful problem.

If a blog niche has one or more of the above mentioned features, then you have found a profitable blog niche with high market demand.

Please note that in the same low demand topic like my daily life, you can choose a higher demand alternative such as How to Start a Profitable Side Hustle.

For Random Quotes, you can replace it with a higher market demand niche like Productivity and Personal Development. Instead of choosing a low demand niche like Village Gossip, you can replace it with a higher demand niche like Local Business Opportunities. Instead of Old Technology Only niche, go for Modern Technology and AI Tools.

This is one of the reasons I built our blog IncomeAffairs in a niche that has high market demand. Topics such as business, entrepreneurship, blogging, online income, careers, and personal finance solve real problems and attract both search traffic and advertisers. The challenge is usually not demand; it's creating content that is more useful, original, and authoritative than competing sites. Hope that makes sense.

Publishing Content without Keyword Research

Another common Mistake some new bloggers make is publishing Content without keyword research. Publishing content without researching what people are searching for will only lead to writing contents that people don't need or search engines won't see or understand.

Keyword research is not just about finding words to put in an article. It helps you understand what people are actively searching for and how to create content that meets their needs.

Here are some benefits you will get from keyword research:

1. Keyword Research Helps You Create Content People Actually Want

When creating contents for our blog Incomeaffairs, instead of guessing topics, keyword research helps me to know the exact questions, problems, and interests of our readers.

For example, rather than writing "Tips for Bloggers," I discovered that people are searching for "common blogging mistakes beginners make" or "how to get AdSense approval fast." So keyword research helps me create contents people are already searching for on the Internet and by extension it saves me from wasting time, energy and resources creating content no one is interested in.

2. Keyword Research Increases Organic Traffic

When you target keywords people are searching for, your content has a better chance of appearing in search results and attracting visitors from search engines.

More relevant rankings often lead to more clicks and consistent traffic over time. If you want to get organic traffic from Google and other search engines, doing keyword research is indispensable.

3. Keyword research Reveals Low-Competition Opportunities

Keyword research helps me to identify keywords that have decent search volume but lower competition.

Instead of competing with giant websites for broad terms like "blogging," I simply target more specific searches such as "blogging mistakes beginners make."

These opportunities are often easier to rank for. You too can do the same to get your content rank on Google and other search engines for a better visibility.

4. Keyword research Improves Conversion and Revenue

Not all traffic is equal. For instance traffic from the United States, UK, Canada, and Australia have high market value than traffic from Nigeria and other African countries. It means that advertisers are willing to pay more to show their products and services to a traffic from these countries I mentioned above then traffic from the third world counties.

Keyword research helps me find high-intent keywords used by people who are ready to take action, such as buy a product, sign up for a service, apply for AdSense or start a business.

Visitors coming from these keywords are more likely to convert into customers, subscribers, or ad revenue. I can simply target visitors from the first tier countries by using keyword research to find topics these people are already searching for on the Internet.

5. It Helps You Understand Your Market Better

Keyword research gives insight into audience pain points, industry trends, popular topics, seasonal interests and competitor strategies.

This information helps you make smarter content and business decisions.

In my own case, keyword research has helped me to optimize our blog IncomeAffairs properly  to create content people are already searching for, increase organic traffic, find easier ranking opportunities, attract visitors who are ready to take action and as well understand our audience and market better. So instead of publishing 100 articles that nobody finds, I publish 20 articles that consistently bring traffic from Google.

The good news is, there are many free and premium keyword Research tools available on the internet you can use without any stress.

Whether you are a beginner or an experienced blogger, you can use Google Keyword Planner, Ubersuggest and Ahrefs (if available in your country) to do your keyword research. Check our guide on  the Best Keyword Research Tools for Beginners to know more free and paid keyword tools to grow your blog.

Focus on long-tail keywords, low competition keywords and search intent.

Starting a Blog without Understanding Search Intent

Another common blogging mistake beginners make is creating content that doesn't match user's search Intent.

To understand what search Intent is, simply ask yourself, does my blog page match what the user actually wants? If your blog content doesn't match the intent for a user's search query, Google and other search engines will not rank that page. It doesn't matter how long or well structured that blog page is.  Meeting and matching user's search Intent is vital in determining whether your blog will appear in SERP (search result page) or not.

There are different types of search Intent you need to know, understand and incorporate while creating your content. Some of them are:

Informational Search Intent:

Informational Search Intent is when a user's search query is about a unique and distinct information. That is, the user wants to learn or know something. The intent must be specific and understandable. For instance if a user searches for "how to promote an affiliate link in Nigeria". This is an informational Search Intent. Google would scan the millions of data available in her library and pick the right resources that exactly match that search query and show them to the user.

Another search Intent is Navigational search Intent. This comes to play when a user keys in a search query that shows he is looking for a specific website or page. Take for example, if I search for the keywords, " digistore24 sign up page". Google will immediately know that I am looking for digistore24 sign up page and bring it up for me. Navigational search Intent helps Google and other search engines to serve users with the right pages or resources they're looking for on the internet faster and efficiently

If The user wants to buy something or take a specific action like sign up, we call it Transactional search Intent. If the user is comparing options, example "best web hosting in Nigeria", it is called Commercial search Intent.

Google and other search engines as a rule of the thumb ensures that every content or page they rank on SERP matches the user's search Intent. If your Blog or content is about slimming tea, search engines will not rank  your page when a user searches a keyword like how to make money online in Nigeria. Reason is because your blog and content do not match the user's search Intent.

Any blog or page you see ranking on the first page of Google matches the users search Intent on that particular keyword.

Whether you are a beginner or an experienced blogger, you need to understand what search Intent is and how to meet that when writing your content.

To fix this mistake, stop creating content only based on personal interest instead focus on what your audience needs and expected search query.

For example you love writing about motivation, but your audience wants practical ways to earn money online.

So before you start writing any blog post, ask what problems does my audience face? What solutions are they searching for? Then create high value, problem-solving content that matches that search query perfectly.

Copying Competitors instead of creating original content

Common Blogging Mistakes to avoid in Nigeria

Copying content from other blogs is a serious mistake that can lead to legal and reputational consequences. Plagiarism violates copyright laws and undermines your credibility as a content creator.

When your site is flagged for duplicate content or copyright infringement, it may face search engine penalties, loss of rankings, and damage to your brand authority. In severe cases, it can also result in legal action.

To avoid these risks, focus on creating original content that reflects your knowledge and perspective. Add personal insights, share real experiences, and deliver unique value to your audience.

Use other sources for research and inspiration, but avoid copying content word for word from other websites. Your goal should be to inform, not replicate.

The truth is you don't need to be an expert content writer before you can create unique and high quality blog posts. Even if you don't know how to write, you can outsource your writing projects to professional SEO Blog writers on Fiverr, Upwork or PeopleperHour and they will create original and high quality blog posts for you at an affordable price. You can also contact me to assist you if you need help with creating original and high contents that are worthy to be be indexed and ranked on Google and as well generate substantial income.

Relying Entirely on AI Generated Content

Another blogging mistake common among many many beginners is relying completely on AI generated contents.

AI has made content creation faster than ever. You can generate a 2,000-word article in minutes. The problem is that speed is not the same as value.

Many bloggers, especially beginners, make the mistake of publishing AI-generated content exactly as it comes without adding their own knowledge, experience, research, or personality. This is where the problems lies.

Why Is it a Blogging Mistake?

1. AI Doesn't Have Real-Life Experience

AI can summarize information from patterns in its training data, but it cannot personally experience anything.

If you ask AI to write about getting AdSense approval in Nigeria, it can provide general advice. However, it cannot tell readers what happened when your own application was rejected, what changes you made, and what finally worked.

Readers trust experience. Search engines increasingly value it too.

2. AI Content Often Sounds Generic

Many AI-generated articles contain overused phrases, predictable introductions, surface-level explanations, repeated ideas and empty motivational statements. When dozens of bloggers publish similar AI-written content, none of them stand out.

3. Many AI generated contents are not Accurate

AI can can make mistakes. Sometimes, it can misinterpret facts, invent statistics that are not realistic, cite non-existent sources and give you  outdated information. That's why publishing AI generated content without fact-checking can damage your credibility and mislead readers.

4. It Weakens Your Brand Voice

People follow blogs because of the unique perspective behind them.

If every article sounds like a machine wrote it, readers have little reason to remember your website or return for more content.

Your opinions, stories, lessons, failures, and insights are what make your content different.

5. It May Trigger Google's Low-Quality Signals

Google does not penalize content simply because AI helped create it. What Google cares about is quality.

AI generated Content may struggle to rank if it is not original, thin, not useful, poorly researched and written only to target keywords.

Many bloggers mistakenly think AI-generated content equals SEO content. It doesn't.

6. It Can Hurt AdSense Approval Chances

AdSense reviewers look for websites that provide genuine value to users.

If your blog is filled with generic AI articles, repetitive content, little original insight and no evidence of expertise, It may be perceived as low-value content and hence rejected from showing Google ads. If you plan to monetize your blog with AdSense, you need to be careful when using AI generated contents on your blog.

The Better Approach

I'm not gonna lie, I use AI as an assistant, not a replacement of my own thinking, knowledge, experience and creativity. Sometimes I use ChatGPT and Claude to generate outlines, brainstorm ideas, improve grammar, expand sections and organize information.

One thing I don't fail to do is to add my own experience, original examples, personal opinions, real-world case studies, current research and logical insights. That's the best way to stay afloat when using AI to create content for your blog.

AI is a powerful tool, but publishing AI content without human input is like serving instant noodles at a five-star restaurant. It may fill the plate, but it rarely leaves a lasting impression.

The bloggers who win are not those who use AI the most. They are the ones who combine AI efficiency with human experience, expertise, and originality. That's where truly valuable content is created. Have you ever used AI to create content for your blog before? Were you able to get AdSense approval with such content? Share your thoughts with me in the comment.

Writing for Google Instead of Human readers

Another common blogging mistake I have noticed among many new bloggers is writing to impress search engines instead of writing a high value content that is useful for readers.  If you are fond of creating content with keyword stuffing, you are writing for Google Instead of human readers.

Keyword stuffing is the practice of forcing the same keyword into a page excessively in an attempt to rank higher on search engines. It used to work many years ago, but today it can hurt your SEO and user experience.

This is why you should avoid it.

1. Keyword stuffing hurts Readability

When keywords are repeated unnaturally, the content becomes difficult and annoying to read. Visitors can quickly lose interest and leave your page.

A good example is if you are looking for blogging tips in Nigeria, our blogging tips in Nigeria guide contains the best blogging tips in Nigeria for beginners seeking blogging tips in Nigeria.

This sounds robotic and repetitive. Did you enjoy reading it? I guess you didn't.

2. Google Can Penalize the Content

Google's algorithms are designed to detect manipulative SEO practices. Excessive keyword repetition can trigger spam signals and reduce your chances of ranking well.

3. It Creates a Poor User Experience

People visit your blog to find useful information, not to read the same phrase repeatedly. A poor reading experience can increase bounce rates and reduce engagement.

4. It Makes Your Content Look Unprofessional

Overstuffed content often appears low-quality and untrustworthy. Readers may assume the writer cares more about rankings than helping users.

5. It Limits Topical Relevance

Modern SEO relies on understanding topics and search intent, not repeating exact keywords. Keyword stuffing prevents you from naturally using related terms, synonyms, and supporting concepts that strengthen content quality.

Let's look at another example of terrible Keyword Stuffing.

The target Keyword is "blogging mistakes for beginners"

Blogging mistakes for beginners are common blogging mistakes for beginners that many bloggers in Nigeria make. If you want to avoid blogging mistakes for beginners, you must understand blogging mistakes for beginners because blogging mistakes in Nigeria can destroy your blogging success in Nigeria.

Here's a better approach to use keywords in your blog post.

Instead of repeating the same keyword endlessly, use natural variations:

"Many beginner bloggers unknowingly make errors that slow down their growth. Understanding these common mistakes can help you build traffic, improve rankings, and grow a sustainable blog."

This version sounds human, provides value, and is more aligned with how Google evaluates content today.

Ignoring E-E-A-T Signals

Another common blogging mistake I have noticed among beginners is ignoring E-E-A-T.
E-E-A-T stands for Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness. When your content lacks real experience, credible insights, supporting evidence, or clear author information, both readers and search engines may question its reliability. This is especially damaging in niches like finance, health, business, and technology where accuracy matters. Content that shows no firsthand knowledge often struggles to earn trust, backlinks, rankings, and returning visitors.

Here are the most practical ways to demonstrate E-E-A-T when writing your blog post.

1. Share Firsthand Experience

Don't just explain a topic. Show that you have actually done it. Instead of writing, "Blogging can make money", say " After publishing 40 articles on my blog, I discovered that articles targeting low-competition keywords generated traffic faster than broad topics". Real experiences instantly increase credibility.

2. Support Claims with Data and Sources

Back up important statements with statistics, studies, reports, or official sources. Instead of writing, " Most bloggers fail because of SEO mistakes", you can put it this way, " According to industry studies, poor keyword targeting and weak content strategy remain among the leading reasons blogs struggle to gain organic traffic". Evidence makes your content more trustworthy.

3. Use Real Examples and Case Studies

Readers trust content that demonstrates results rather than making assumptions. Take a good look at these two sets of sentences below, you will agree with me that the second sentence is stronger because it didn't just make a bold statement, it supported it with real example.

"Keyword research is important."

"A Nigerian finance blog increased its organic traffic by targeting long-tail keywords with lower competition instead of chasing broad terms.

Examples prove your points.

4. Show Who Is Behind the Content

Include an author bio, About page, and contact information on your blog. Readers and search engines want to know whether a real person stands behind the content.

This is why I allowed my author's profile to show at the bottom of every post I wrote and published on this blog. When search engines or readers see "post written by Damian Alamba, Founder of IncomeAffairs.com, with practical experience in blogging, SEO, and online business,"

it makes my post to carry more authority than an anonymous article.

5. Be Accurate, Balanced, and Transparent

Avoid making exaggerated promises or presenting opinions as facts. Instead of writing, "This SEO strategy will rank your blog on Google's first page in 7 days." Simply say,  "This SEO strategy can improve your chances of ranking, but results depend on competition, content quality, backlinks, and search intent."

Trust grows when readers feel you're informing them, not selling them a fantasy.

The simple rule is before publishing any article, ask:

"Have I shown real experience, provided evidence, demonstrated expertise, established credibility, and earned trust?"

If the answer is yes, you're actively demonstrating E-E-A-T rather than just writing words for search engines.

Publishing Thin Content That Adds No Real Value

Another common mistake I find among new bloggers is publishing low quality contents yet blaming Google for not indexing and ranking them. Thin contents and poorly structured articles you rushed to publish won't get your blog on the first page of Google. Instead it will make you look like an unserious and inexperienced blogger in the eyes of Google and other search engines.
Why low quality content hurts? It leads to high bounce rate, low rankings and lack of trust from both search engines and readers who use your site.
This is how to fix it. Focus on depth, clarity and original insights.
Aim for authority content (1500–4000+ words) where necessary.

 Publishing Inconsistently

Another common mistake among new bloggers is publishing content without a consistent schedule. Many assume that posting multiple articles within a short period will improve visibility, but inconsistency such as publishing several posts at once and then going inactive for weeks can negatively impact your SEO performance.

Irregular publishing patterns reduce audience trust and engagement. When readers cannot rely on consistent updates, they are less likely to return, interact with your content, or share your posts. Over time, this weakens your growth and search engine rankings.

To avoid this, develop a structured content calendar. Aim to publish consistently, whether that is two to three posts per week or a schedule that suits your capacity. Consistency is far more effective than short bursts of activity.

Ignoring Technical SEO Basics

Another blogging mistake you need to be aware of and fix as soon as possible is ignoring on-page SEO basics. Common issues to watch out for are no meta description, poor headings and no internal linking. To fix this problem, optimize every post. Use keywords naturally. Add H1, H2, H3 tags accordingly. Write compelling meta descriptions and use internal links where necessary. When I started this blog Incomeaffairs, I made this same mistake. I used to think that H2 is the Subheading while H3 is the minor heading but I was wrong. Later on, I learned how to use the H1, H2 and H3 correctly. Here's is how to structure your blog post correctly:

H1 → The article title (WordPress usually creates this automatically from your post title)

H2 → Main sections of your article (Heading)

H3 → Subsections that explain an H2 section (Subheading)

H4, H5, H6 → Minor heading (used less often)

Using Unreliable Blogging Platforms

Choosing the right blogging platform is a critical decision that directly affects your blog’s performance, stability, and long-term growth. Relying on unfamiliar or unproven platforms can expose your blog to risks such as downtime, data loss, and limited support.

For beginners or those working with a low budget, established platforms like Blogger or WordPress.com offer a reliable starting point. These platforms have a long track record of stability and are widely used by many successful blogs.

However, free hosting platforms come with limitations, including reduced control, restricted branding, and limited monetization options. As your blog grows in traffic and revenue potential, it is advisable to upgrade to a custom domain and invest in reliable paid hosting for greater flexibility and scalability.

Ultimately, your blog should be treated as a long-term digital asset. Choosing a stable platform from the start and planning for future upgrades will position you for sustainable growth.

 Ignoring Mobile User Experience

Many new bloggers design websites that perform well on desktop but fail to deliver a good experience on mobile devices. This is a critical mistake, as the majority of internet users around the world access content through smartphones.

If your blog is not optimized for mobile, visitors will struggle to navigate your site, leading to higher bounce rates and reduced engagement. Poor mobile usability also negatively affects your search engine rankings.

To address this, use responsive themes that adapt to different screen sizes, optimize images for faster loading, and regularly test your site’s mobile usability to ensure a seamless user experience.

Slow Website Speed

Heavy images and poor hosting can slow down your website speed. And when this happens, visitors leave quickly and Google ranks you lower.

To fix this problem, I usually use free tools like tinypng.com to compress my images and Google PageSpeed insights to analyze my website speed.
Use caching plugins and choose fast hosting. It saves you time, energy and unnecessary regrets.

 Not Building an Email List

Another blogging mistake you need to avoid is relying only on Google or social media traffic without an email list.

The truth is without building an email list, you don’t own your audience. You can fix this mistake by starting today to collect emails from users who visit your website. Offer free resources in exchange for their email address. Use lead magnets and Send newsletters. There are many free and paid email marketing solutions you can use to get started. I have used Brevo, MailChimp and GetResponse in the past and their service is good.

Ignoring Content Promotion

Another common mistake new bloggers make is neglecting content promotion. Many rely on a “publish and pray” approach, assuming search engines will automatically drive traffic regardless of content quality.

In reality, even high-quality content requires active promotion to gain visibility and traction. Without it, your blog will struggle to attract meaningful traffic.

If you have a limited budget, you can promote your content organically through channels such as WhatsApp, Facebook groups, LinkedIn, and Pinterest, among other reliable platforms.

Content promotion is just as important as content creation for achieving consistent growth.

This is how I do it, after publishing my content here, I copy the title, introduction an URL of the published post and share them on my LinkedIn timeline, Facebook and Pinterest. I create a kind of suspense and curiosity by attaching CLICK HERE TO READ FULL POST at the end of the intro so my audience on Facebook and LinkedIn can click the link to visit my blog. You can share the Link or URL in the comment section to avoid the the algorithm limiting the visibility of your post on Facebook and LinkedIn.

 Lack of Monetization Strategy

Another common mistake among new bloggers is starting a blog without a clear monetization strategy. While monetization may not be essential for hobby bloggers, it is critical for those who intend to generate income online.

Without a defined revenue plan, it becomes difficult to align your content, audience, and growth strategy with profitable outcomes.

To avoid this, plan your monetization approach from the beginning. Decide whether you will earn through methods such as advertising, affiliate marketing, selling digital products, sponsored content, or freelance services. Focus on the options that best align with your niche, audience, and long-term goals.

Depending Solely on AdSense for Monetization

Relying only on AdSense is a big mistake that can cost you a fortune especially if you are a blogger based in Nigeria or other African countries. AdSense has low earnings in Nigeria due to low RPM.

You need to diversify your income via affiliate marketing, Info products, coaching or even paid membership if you want to increase your earnings.

 Poor Blog Design

This may look like it's not a problem but it matters. Cluttered, confusing layouts can make your blog look ugly and difficult to navigate. When Users don't find your blog attractive, they ignore it even though you have good contents on your blog.

To fix this issue, keep your blog design clean, simple and easy to navigate. There are many beautiful free themes you can use for your WordPress or blogspot blogs. The good news is they are SEO optimized, responsive and easy to navigate.

Ignoring Google Search Console Data

Another obvious mistake many bloggers make is publishing content without tracking performance data or user behavior. Why does It matter? Without analytics, you are guessing. You won’t know which posts bring traffic, which keywords rank, or why visitors leave your site. To fix this problem, use reliable tools such as:

  • Google Analytics for user behavior insights.
  • Google Search Console for search performance and indexing data.

This is What to Track:

  • Traffic: Identify which pages attract the most visitors and replicate their success
  • Bounce Rate: Detect pages where users leave quickly and improve content quality or relevance
  • Keywords: Monitor search terms that bring traffic and optimize those pages further.

Tracking data helps you make informed decisions, improve weak content, and scale what already works. This leads to steady traffic growth and better search rankings.

Using Clickbait Headlines That Disappoint Readers

Another mistake you should avoid as a new blogger who wants to succeed is writing clickbait without delivering value. A clickbait as the name implies involves using exaggerated, curiosity-driven headlines that promise big results but fail to deliver meaningful or useful content.

Why is Clickbait a Problem?

Clickbait may win the click, but it loses trust. When readers feel misled, they leave quickly, stop engaging, and rarely return. Over time, this hurts your credibility, increases bounce rate, and signals poor quality to search engines.

For Example:

A title like “Make ₦500,000 in 24 Hours with This Simple Trick”  is a clickbait that leads to vague or recycled advice.

The best practice is to Make your headline compelling but honest.

Ensure your content delivers exactly what the title promises, provides clear, actionable value and goes beyond surface-level information.

Here on IncomeAffairs.com, our posts attract with curiosity, retain with value, and satisfy with clarity.

 Not Updating Old Content

Another common mistake is neglecting to update outdated content. Over time, information changes, and articles published years ago may no longer be relevant or accurate. Many bloggers leave older posts untouched while expecting them to rank on Google’s first page, which is unrealistic in today’s digital landscape where algorithms prioritize high-quality, up-to-date content.

To maintain relevance and improve SEO, regularly review your posts. Add updated information, refine your content, and optimize for current search trends to ensure your articles continue to attract traffic and authority.

 Neglecting Internal Linking

Blogging Mistakes to avoid in 2026

Another common mistake I've noticed among many new bloggers these days is ignoring internal linking.  Internal links helps to boosts your SEO ranking.

Internal links help search engines understand your website structure and content relationships.

When you link related posts together, you signal to Google:

What your content is about,

Which pages are important,

How topics are connected.

Result? Better indexing and higher chances of ranking on Google’s first page.

Secondly, internal links help to distribute link authority (Link Juice) from one page to another.

When one of your posts ranks or gets backlinks, it gains authority.

Internal links allow you to pass that authority to other pages and strengthen weaker or new posts.

The result? Your entire blog grows, not just one post.

Ignoring internal linking is a costly mistake because it jeopardizes user experience.

Internal links guide readers to more helpful content on your blog.

For example,  a reader on “How to Start a Blog in Nigeria” can click to “Best Blogging Platforms” or  “How to Make Money Blogging”.

The result is that readers stay longer,  find more value and your blog feels structured and professional.

Another reason why ignoring internal linking is a significant mistake is that it increases bounce rate on your blog.

Without internal links, visitors read one post and leave. With internal links, they click to another article and continue exploring your blog. The result? Lower bounce rate.

Google loves higher engagement signals. While I'm trying to explain the gravity of this mistake so you would begin to take internal linking very serious, I just remembered that strategic internal linking can also increase your blog's page views and earnings.

More clicks = more page views.

If you monetize through Ads, affiliate links and digital products, your earning can increase significantly.

Internal links naturally increase exposure.
Don’t just link randomly. Use strategic anchor texts like:

“learn how to start a profitable blog in Nigeria”

“see proven ways to make money blogging”
Always link related articles and that will improve your blog's SEO structure.

 Targeting High Competition Keywords Only

Another common mistake many bloggers, especially beginners make is targeting highly competitive keywords without first building authority and trust.

While there is nothing inherently wrong with aiming for competitive keywords, doing so too early can limit your chances of ranking, particularly if your blog lacks domain strength and content depth.

To improve your results, start with low-competition, long-tail keywords that are easier to rank for. As your blog gains authority over time, you can gradually target more competitive search terms.

Not Building Topical Authority

Many new bloggers write random, disconnected articles instead of building deep authority around a specific topic.
For example, you write one post on “how to make money online,” another on “healthy eating,” then another on “football news.” Even within one niche, you publish scattered topics without depth.

This is why it hurts your blog, Google doesn’t see you as an expert in any subject.
Your chances of ranking on the first page reduce drastically. Visitors don’t trust or return to your blog. Internal linking becomes weak and ineffective.

In today’s SEO landscape, Google rewards topical authority, not just isolated content.

To fix this problem, focus on building content clusters around your niche.
For example if your blog is in make money online niche,
you can create a Pillar Post titled: “How to Make Money Online in Nigeria”.

Also create Supporting Posts such as:
Affiliate marketing in Nigeria.
How to start a Profitable Blog in Nigeria.
Freelancing platforms for Nigerians.
Best online business ideas in Nigeria.

Then interlink all related posts.
Go deep, not wide. Become known for ONE thing first.

Instead of trying to be everywhere, aim to dominate a specific topic.
When Google sees consistent, high-quality content around one subject, your rankings, traffic, and authority grow faster. This was how I built IncomeAffairs as an authority blog and most of our posts started ranking on their respective keywords.

Ignoring Branding

Another common mistake new bloggers make is neglecting branding. While some individuals blog for personal expression, those who aim to generate income must treat their blog as a brand.

Without a clear brand identity, it becomes difficult to build authority, gain trust, and connect effectively with your target audience. A weak or inconsistent brand reduces credibility and limits your ability to attract and convert readers into customers.

To address this, develop a distinct voice, maintain consistent visual elements, and communicate a clear, focused message across all your content.

 Not Networking with Other Bloggers

One common mistake many beginner bloggers  make is working in isolation. Blogging is a collaborative ecosystem where growth is often accelerated through strategic relationships.

Without connections, it becomes difficult to earn high-quality backlinks, which are essential for improving your blog’s domain authority and search engine rankings.

Working alone limits your visibility and slows your growth potential.

To address this, build relationships with other bloggers in your niche. Collaborate through guest posting, partnerships, and community engagement to expand your reach, increase credibility, and strengthen your SEO performance.

Focusing Only on Traffic Instead of Audience Building

Many new bloggers are obsessed over pageviews while ignoring the people behind those numbers. Traffic can disappear overnight due to algorithm updates, but an engaged audience remains. A blog with 500 loyal subscribers is often more valuable than one with 50,000 disengaged visitors. Focus on building trust, growing an email list, encouraging comments, and creating content that solves recurring problems. Sustainable blogging is built on relationships, not vanity metrics.

Chasing Every Trending Topic

Not every trending topic deserves a place on your blog. Constantly jumping from one trend to another creates a scattered content strategy and confuses both readers and search engines about your expertise. While trending content can generate temporary traffic, it rarely builds long-term authority. Prioritize topics that align with your niche, audience needs, and long-term content goals. A focused blog grows faster than a blog chasing every viral conversation.

Failing to Build Backlinks Naturally

Many bloggers publish content and wait for rankings to happen naturally. Unfortunately, great content alone is often not enough. Backlinks remain one of the strongest signals of authority in search engines. Without them, even valuable articles may struggle to compete against established websites. Build backlinks through guest posting, digital PR, expert contributions, original research, and creating resources people naturally want to reference. The more quality websites that trust your content, the easier it becomes to earn visibility in search results.

Using Weak or No Call to Action (CTA)

Many bloggers spend hours creating valuable content but fail to tell readers what to do next. As a result, visitors read the article and leave without subscribing, commenting, sharing, or exploring other pages. Every blog post should guide readers toward a specific action that aligns with your goals. Whether it is joining your email list, reading a related article, downloading a resource, or leaving a comment, a strong call to action turns passive readers into engaged followers and helps your blog grow beyond pageviews.

Publishing Duplicate Content

Duplicate content occurs when the same or substantially similar content appears on multiple pages, either on your website or across different websites. While Google does not always penalize duplicate content directly, it can weaken your blog's visibility and growth.

Why Duplicate Content Hurts Your Blog

  • Confuses search engines about which version should rank.
  • Splits ranking signals across multiple URLs.
  • Wastes crawl budget on repeated pages.
  • Reduces the chances of your preferred page appearing in search results.
  • Makes your blog look less original and less valuable.

Common Types of Duplicate Content

1. Internal Duplicate Content: The same content appears on multiple pages of your website.

To fix this, merge similar pages, use canonical tags, and redirect unnecessary duplicates.

2. Copied Content: Content copied from another website without adding unique value.

To fix this, create original content based on your own insights, research, and experience.

3. Near-Duplicate Content: Multiple articles targeting the same topic with only minor wording changes.

To fix this, consolidate overlapping posts into one comprehensive resource.

4. URL Variations: The same page is accessible through different URLs, such as mobile, tracking, or parameter URLs.

To fix this, set a canonical URL and ensure only one version is indexed.

5. AI-Generated Duplicate Content Publishing AI-generated text that closely resembles content already available online.

To fix this, add original examples, firsthand experience, expert insights, and unique analysis before publishing.

The best solution to duplicate content is simple: create content that offers a unique perspective, answers search intent better, and provides value readers cannot easily find elsewhere.

 Giving Up Too Early

One of the most critical mistakes new bloggers  make is giving up too early. Blogging is not a get-rich-quick model; it requires patience, consistency, and strategic execution.

New bloggers often face challenges such as slow indexing, low rankings, technical issues, and minimal traffic. These obstacles are a normal part of the growth process, not a sign of failure.

To succeed, stay consistent with content creation, continue learning, and refine your strategies based on performance data. Long-term commitment is what separates successful bloggers from those who quit too soon.

Why Most Nigerian Blogs Struggle to Grow

Many smart Nigerians have produced some of the most successful blogs on the internet in almost every niche in the blogging ecosystem. If you Google top 10 biggest blogs in Nigeria, you would see the likes of Lindaikejisblog, Bellanaija, Naijaloaded, NotJustOk, TechCabal, TechPoint and several others. After visiting and analyzing these blogs, I discovered why most Nigerians blogs struggle to grow. The top successful blogs in Nigeria didn't arrive where they're today by chance. They have been consistent for decades, they have put in the work and the result is what we're seeing today.

One of the reasons why most Nigerian blogs struggle to grow is because they keep doing the wrong things and hoping on luck to smile on them. For instance, some of them keep repeating the same blogging mistakes such as choosing the wrong niche, ignoring keyword research, publishing low-quality content, inconsistent posting, neglecting SEO, and failing to promote content. These mistakes reduce traffic, rankings, and monetization potential.

I believe there's no magic wand to grow a blog in Nigeria quickly. However, if you focus on a clear niche, target low-competition keywords, publish high-quality SEO content consistently, promote your posts, build an email list, and monetize strategically, your blog will still grow accordingly.
